The company's founder, Antonio Salviati, was a lawyer; he became interested in glass while restoring mosaics in St Mark's Basilica in Venice. He founded Salviati and Company to revive Venetian art glass; its workshop operated on Murano.

Salviati operated large-scale production, mainly for export, drawing on Renaissance vessel forms. The company also operated in the 20th century – the Cooper Hewitt collection includes a mid-20th-century vase made using the casing technique in violet, blue and colourless glass.
