The glassworks was founded in 1933 by Napoleone Barovier, Luigi Ferro and Antonio Seguso (b. 1888) as Artistica Vetreria e Soffieria Barovier, Seguso e Ferro; it later adopted the name Seguso Vetri d’Arte. The Seguso family traces its glassmaking tradition back to 1397, and in 1605 was entered in the Libro d’Oro Murano. Antonio’s sons included Ernesto (1904–1986) and Archimede (1909–1999).

The glassworks’ long-standing artistic director was Flavio Poli (1900–1984), who developed the Sommerso glass technique, awarded the Compasso d’Oro in 1954. In 1974, the family sold the brand; in 2007, Gianluca Seguso regained it together with the archives. The archive covering 1933–1973 – more than 13,000 photographs and 22,000 drawings – was acquired by Fondazione Cini, which made it available online.
