Świdnickie Fabryki Mebli trace their origins to the Państwowe Zjednoczone Zakłady Drzewne nr 1 (State United Timber Works no. 1), opened in Świdnica in 1945; from the 1950s, the plant operated as Świdnicka Fabryka Mebli and from 1952 was under the Centralny Zarząd Przemysłu Meblarskiego (Central Board of the Furniture Industry). In 1959, it produced, among other things, radio cabinets “Preludium” and “Kaprys”, and in the mid-1960s – “Jacek” furniture, “Granada” bookcases and “Stabil” tables, also for IKEA.
In 1969, the Świdnicki Ośrodek Przemysłu Meblarskiego (Świdnica Furniture Industry Centre) was established, and in 1970 the factory in Świebodzice was incorporated into it – from then on, armchair 366 designed by Józef Chierowski was also produced in Świdnica. In 1973, the group adopted the name Dolnośląska Fabryka Mebli, and IKEA became its main customer; in 1979, it employed more than 3500 people. In 1991, the enterprise was divided – the plants in Świdnica and Srebrna Góra formed DOLMEB, which was privatised in 2002.
