The manufactory was founded in 1853 in Pécs by Miklós Zsolnay (1800–1880). Initially, it produced stoneware and other ceramics. In 1893, the company introduced porcelain with an iridescent eosin glaze that changed colour depending on the viewing angle.

In 1948, the factory was nationalised. Under the name Pécsi Porcelángyár (Porcelain Factory in Pécs), it mainly produced tableware. In 1991, the company was transformed into a joint-stock company, and in 2012 its owner became Bachar Najari.

The Zsolnay Museum operates at the factory.
