Decorative Fat Lava ceramic candle holder, Germany, 1970s
Description
Decorative Fat Lava ceramic candle holder, Germany, 1970s
Vintage spherical candle holder, made from art pottery in the 1970s. The design draws on the Fat Lava style, enormously popular during that era, characterized by expressive organic textures and bold colour combinations.
The vessel catches the eye with its contrasting decoration, in which a creamy-white background is interspersed with irregular, fluid patches of intense red glaze with a glossy finish. The entire surface of the lantern is covered with numerous holes of varying diameters, from tiny dots to larger circles, which create spectacular lighting effects when a candle is placed inside. The piece has a flattened base for stability and a wide opening at the bottom, making it easy to insert a tealight.
This decorative form perfectly captures the uninhibited aesthetic of 1970s design and makes a unique accent in retro and modern interiors.
