Metal Art Deco cups, Czechoslovakia, 1930s
Description
Set of six modernist cups for punch, mulled wine or mocha coffee from the Czechoslovak Art Deco period, dating from the 1930s.
The vessels are distinguished by a skilfully crafted, highly geometric, faceted body, deeply rooted in Central European functionalism and avant-garde design (strongly reminiscent of iconic works by Ladislav Sutnar for Krásnej Jizby, the Sandrik manufactory or the Bratři Schusterowie works). Made of silver-plated metal, they have original, rich gilding (vermeil) on the inside, protecting the metal from the effects of hot or acidic drinks.
Each cup has a striking, contrasting crescent-shaped handle made of authentic black Bakelite.
The bases feature subtle, circular technical punch marks characteristic of high-quality export tableware from this period.
The items have been preserved in their original condition, with a captivating, authentic, shimmering array of patina colours that emphasises their age and provenance.
The silver plating and interior gilding remain completely intact.
