Astrid Tjalk (née Larsen) was born on 27 May 1925 in Hornbæk and died there on 19 February 2014. From 1941, she studied at Kunsthåndværkerskolen in Copenhagen. In 1944, she began working as a pattern painter at Kähler Keramik in Næstved, where she later worked independently in her own studio.
Her work for Kähler consisted mainly of stylised fish and animal motifs on vases and dishes, often on forms by Nils Kähler. In 1955, she founded Fyrbo Keramik in Næstved with her husband Tage O. Nielsen; it moved to Hornbæk in 1960. Over time, production also included smaller objects, including jewellery.
