Bendt Winge was born on 16 December 1907 in Alstahaug. He studied at Oslo Fag- og Forskole (1927–1928) and Statens håndverks- og kunstindustriskole (1928–1930). In 1933, he qualified as a journeyman carpenter and, in the same year, stayed in Nuremberg, Germany.
In the 1950s (according to the National Museum, around 1958), he designed chair 1009 for Møbelindustri I/S in Egersund. Glidestol 1013 was created in 1958 for Bjarne Hansens Verksteder, while Kleppe Møbelfabrikk produced his extendable table (Klaffebord). He designed the R-49 “Nordic” plastic chair for Romo Fabrikker (Nordic Comfort Products); more than 5 million chairs from the R series were produced.
He received the Jacob-prisen (1962) and the Merket for god design mark (1970) for the R-49 chair. The National Museum in Oslo holds five of his objects, including Klaffebord no. 7, model 1009 and a stacking chair from 1970. Winge’s work includes both wooden furniture made by cabinetmakers and mass-produced plastic chairs. He died on 15 August 1983 in Bærum, aged 75.
