Johan Elias Svedberg was born on 26 June 1913 in Uppsala and died on 11 September 1987 in Tylösand. He studied under Carl Malmsten (1931–1932), studied in the USA and Europe, and ran his own architectural practice from 1935 to 1944. From 1944, he was a consulting architect for Nordiska Kompaniet (NK) and its factory in Nyköping, head of NK-inredning from 1952, and NK's sales director from 1962.

At the 1939 World's Fair in New York, he presented a summer cottage room with Astrid Sampe. During the Second World War, he designed Triva furniture for NK, supplied in flat packs; the Triva Bygg family was presented in Malmö in 1944, and he later developed the concept with Lena Larsson. He was vice-chairman of Svenska slöjdföreningen (Swedish Society of Crafts and Design) from 1959. His work is held by Nationalmuseum.
