Ilta Esteri Tomula was born on 31 October 1920 in Helsinki, where she also died on 18 April 1998. In 1947, she graduated in ceramics from Taideteollinen oppilaitos and began working at Arabia that same year as a decorative artist; she remained there until her retirement.

Her best-known collections include Fennica vases and serving dishes, the Krokus dinner service, Vegeta enamelled tableware with vegetable motifs, and Botanica wall plates. In her decorations, she combined printing – thin black outlines – with hand painting. For around thirty years, she also taught at Toimela folk high school in Helsinki.
