Finn Juhl was born in 1912 in Frederiksberg. He studied architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and then worked for around 10 years at the office of architect Vilhelm Lauritzen.
From 1937, his furniture was made by cabinetmaker Niels Vodder; their collaboration continued until 1959. It was during this period that the NV45 armchair (1945) and Chieftain Chair (1949) were created, the latter presented at the exhibition of the cabinetmakers' guild in Copenhagen. From 1950, his furniture was produced in the USA by Baker Furniture. Juhl also designed the interior of the Trusteeship Council Chamber at the United Nations headquarters in New York (1951–1952).
He received, among other honours, the Eckersberg Medal (1947). His furniture is held in the collections of MoMA and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, while his home in Ordrup is open to visitors through the Ordrupgaard museum. Arne Vodder was one of Juhl's pupils. He died in 1989.
More Danish furniture from this period can be found in the SCANDINAVIAN DESIGN and Mid-Century Modern collections.
