Hans Gustav Ehrenreich was born on 11 November 1917 in Rønde and died in 1984. He trained as a furniture cabinetmaker in Kolind and worked in Stilling from 1943. Around 1950, he established the “Ehrenreichs Trækunst” workshop there, producing one-off decorative and functional objects from teak, rosewood, bog oak and African wood.

At the end of the 1960s, he created the first prototypes of the Hoptimist figure. The products were distributed by Hingelberg of Aarhus, and exhibitions at Den Permanente in Copenhagen opened foreign markets, including the USA. The period of large-scale production lasted from 1967 to 1974, when imports of the products into the USA were banned.
