Helmut Bätzner was born on 2 January 1928 in Nagold and died on 21 January 2010 in Karlsruhe. He trained as a cabinetmaker and then studied architecture at the University of Stuttgart; he was a student and associate of Rolf Gutbrod. In 1962–1963, he was a fellow at Villa Massimo in Rome, and from 1964 he worked as an independent architect and designer.
In 1964, he won the competition for a new building for Badisches Staatstheater in Karlsruhe (built in 1970–1975). For this project, his office developed the Bofinger chair (BA 1171) in 1964–1966 – the first mass-produced one-piece plastic chair, manufactured by Bofinger until 1984 and serving as a model for many others; it is held in the collections of many museums.
