Jan Bočan was born in 1937 in Český Brod. In 1962, he graduated from the Faculty of Architecture at the Czech Technical University in Prague, where he ran his own studio from 1990; in 2006, he became a professor. He co-designed the ČSSR embassy in London (1971), recognised by RIBA, the embassy in Stockholm (1972), Prague’s main railway station (1973), the InterContinental Hotel in Prague (1974) and the Velká Ohrada housing estate.

For the embassy in Stockholm, he designed all the furniture, including geometric bentwood armchairs. All the furniture had to come from Czechoslovakia: Dřevopodnik Holešov made upholstered armchairs for the rooms and foyer, while TON made the bentwood armchairs with woven elements to Bočan’s design. Furniture from Holešov was also supplied to other embassies and the InterContinental Hotel.

In 2009, he received the Grand Prix Obce architektů (Association of Architects) for his lifetime achievement. He died in 2010 in Prague.
