Kaj Gottlob was born on 9 November 1887 in Copenhagen, where he also died on 12 May 1976. After attending technical college (1905–1908), he studied architecture at the Royal Academy, graduating in 1914; he belonged to the group of young neoclassicists Den fri Architektforening. From 1914 to 1924 he was an assistant at the Academy, and in 1924 he became a professor; he later also served as Copenhagen’s municipal building inspector.

Together with his colleagues, he developed Nordic neoclassicism, combining modernism, classicism and folk architecture – including in the Danish student residence in Paris (1929) and Ørstedhus in Copenhagen (1934). His Copenhagen schools, including Katrinedal Skole (1935), broke with classicism and served for years as models for Danish schools.
