Karl Gustav Hansen was born on 10 December 1914 in Kolding and died in 2002. He was the son of silversmith Hans Hansen; from 1930, he apprenticed at the family firm Hans Hansen Sølvsmedie, for which he designed a jewellery series in 1932. From 1935 to 1938, he studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts under Einar Utzon-Frank.
After his father's death in 1940, he returned to Kolding and took over the company's design direction. He is considered a pioneer of Scandinavian silver design.
