Kerttu Nurminen, née Rantanen, was born on 8 March 1943 in Lahti. From 1966 to 1970, she studied ceramics at the Taideteollinen oppilaitos school, where her teacher was Kaj Franck. Despite her training in ceramics, her work is primarily associated with glass.
For around 35 years, she designed for the Nuutajärvi glassworks. Her designs include the Mondo series – according to the Victoria and Albert Museum, designed in 1988 and introduced into production in 1996 by Iittala/Nuutajärvi; an example is held in the museum's collection. Oiva Toikka and Gunnel Nyman were also associated with the Nuutajärvi glassworks.
Kerttu Nurminen's works are held in museum collections in several countries: at the Design Museum in Helsinki, Nasjonalmuseet in Oslo, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.
