Olivier Mourgue was born in Paris in 1939. He graduated from École Boulle and studied at École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs. From 1960, he worked closely with the furniture manufacturer Airborne, for which he presented the Joker armchair (1959).
For Airborne, he designed the pop, futuristic Djinn collection (1963) – the first mass-produced seats made from a steel frame filled with polyurethane foam and fitted with a removable cover. The red Djinn models furnished the space station in Stanley Kubrick’s film “2001: A Space Odyssey” (1968). He also designed the Whist seat (1964), lamps for Disderot and furniture for, among others, Renault, Prisunic and Mobilier national. From 1976, he lived in Brittany and taught at the school of fine arts in Brest until 2002.
