Paolo Venini was born on 12 January 1895 in Cusano (Milanino) near Milan, and died on 22 July 1959 in Venice. He trained as a lawyer and practised in Milan. In 1921, he became involved with a glassworks on Murano; from 1925, the company V.S.M. Venini & C. operated, whose co-founders, according to the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague, also included Martinuzzi and Zecchini.

Designers Carlo Scarpa and Tomaso Buzzi worked at Venini's glassworks in the 1930s–1940s, followed after the war by Fulvio Bianconi; Gio Ponti and Tapio Wirkkala also collaborated with it. The Fazzoletto series was created jointly with Bianconi. In 2024–2025, the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague presented the exhibition “Paolo Venini and his Furnace. Venetian Glass 1934–1959”.
