Pierre Chapo was born on 23 July 1927 in Paris and died in June 1987. He studied architecture at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts and in 1947 met a ship cabinetmaker. He ran a gallery on boulevard de l’Hôpital in Paris’s 13th arrondissement and a workshop in Clamart, and from 1967 a furniture company in Gordes, Provence.
He worked in solid wood – oak, elm, ash and teak – drawing on the work of Noguchi and Charlotte Perriand (Les Arcs). Among other things, he designed the “Godot” bed for Samuel Beckett and the Œil table. He received the Gold Medal of the City of Paris (1960) and a bronze medal at the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs (1967).
