Poul Volther was born in 1923. Trained as a cabinetmaker, he graduated from Kunsthåndværkerskolen in Copenhagen. From 1949, he worked at FDB Møbler under the direction of Børge Mogensen, and later headed its design studio. For FDB, he designed, among other things, Windsor chairs; in 1953, he created his Pyramid Chair.
Volther’s best-known design is the Corona armchair: the first sketch was made in 1961, and production was launched by Erik Jørgensen in 1964. The model was successfully reissued in 1997, and in 2002 it was used during the European Union summit. Volther died in 2001.
