Viola Gråsten was born on 18 November 1910 in Keuruu, Finland, and died on 20 October 1994 in Stockholm. She studied at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in Helsinki; in 1944, she moved to Sweden, where she drew for „Bonniers månadstidning” and „Dagens Nyheter”.
In 1945, Astrid Sampe employed her at the NK weaving mill, and four years later in the textile department of Nordiska Kompaniet. She designed rya rugs in bold colour combinations that were unusual at the time, with long pile, as well as printed textiles. Her works are held at Röhsska Museum (the “Blå måne” rya) and Nationalmuseum.
