Petter Werner West was born on 25 March 1890 in Tuusula and died on 6 July 1959 in Helsinki. From 1908 to 1911, he studied at the Central School of Applied Arts; in 1911, he co-founded the Ornamo association. He worked, among other places, at the Moscow furniture shop Nordiska Kompaniet (1916–1917) and at Kotiteollisuus Oy Pirtti.
From 1923 to 1959, he was Stockmann’s furniture designer and head of its design office. He was among those who introduced international functionalism to Finland; like Alvar Aalto, he used bentwood and laminated wood. He designed interiors for public buildings, including the Parliament House in Helsinki and the Elite restaurant. He is considered to have laid the foundations of Finnish industrial furniture design.
