The company was founded in 1954 in Svendborg by Erik Jørgensen, a saddler and upholsterer by profession. Initially, it was a small workshop; a regular factory was established in the early 1960s. After the founder’s death in 1998, the company was run by his sons, Niels and Ole. Production still takes place in Svendborg, where around 50 craftspeople work, according to a trade magazine.
Erik Jørgensen works both with its own design team and with external designers. The Foersom & Hiort-Lorenzen duo has been associated with the company since the 1970s; the catalogue has also included, among others, Poul M. Volther, Hannes Wettstein, Louise Campbell, Jørgen Gammelgaard and Erik Ole Jørgensen. Since 1989, the company has produced the Ox Chair armchair by Hans J. Wegner, designed in 1960, while Volther’s Corona armchair remains in the range.
In October 2020, one hundred per cent of the shares in Erik Jørgensen Møbelfabrik were acquired by the Danish Fredericia – a family-owned furniture manufacturer associated with Børge Mogensen since 1955. The acquisition was announced on 7 October 2020. At MIDMOD, Erik Jørgensen furniture appears as individual pieces from the secondary market.
