The company’s roots can be traced to two firms: Antoni Tabaka’s joinery in Swarzędz, operating since 1905, and Wytwórnia Mebli Artystycznych Józefa Sroczyńskiego (Józef Sroczyński’s Artistic Furniture Workshop) in Poznań. During the interwar period, Tabaka’s workshop grew into a large factory, the first mechanised furniture factory in Poland.
In 1952, following nationalisation, the state-owned enterprise Swarzędzka Fabryka Mebli was established, later becoming Swarzędzkie Fabryki Mebli. By the late 1980s, it encompassed plants in Swarzędz, Kostrzyn, Poznań, Mosina, Kościan, Rawicz and Gostyń, while furniture from Swarzędz found its way into homes throughout the country.
In 1990, the enterprise was commercialised, and in 1991 it was listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange. From 2000, it operated as Swarzędz Meble S.A. In 2009, a resolution was passed to liquidate the company, and in 2011 it was delisted.
Furniture from Polish factories of this period can be found in the PRL Furniture and PRL sideboards collections.
