The armchair designed by Illum Wikkelsø for Niels Eilersen is a classic example of Danish design from the 1960s, in which form and function remain in perfect balance. Models of this type—with high backrests and characteristically contoured armrests—are among Wikkelsø’s recognisable designs. He consistently worked with an organic, “soft” furniture silhouette and prioritised user comfort.

The structure is made of solid elm with a clearly visible grain pattern and warm colouring. In designs of this type, particular attention is paid to detail—the gently twisted, sculptural armrests and flowing transitions between the structural elements are characteristic of this model. These subtle solutions are precisely what make the armchair look light despite its solid construction.

The armchair’s wooden frame underwent meticulous, professional restoration, including the removal of old finishes, staining, and lacquer finishing. The restoration was carried out by a talented and experienced cabinetmaker with more than 20 years of experience. The seat has been newly upholstered in a brown, variegated fabric made from a blend of wool, cotton, and silk. Thanks to these treatments, the armchair looks magnificent and will serve its new owner for many years without concern about damage or deterioration through everyday use.

Stylistically, it belongs to the mid-century modern movement and Scandinavian modernism. There is no ornamentation here in the traditional sense—the aesthetic derives directly from the construction. Organic lines, ergonomic proportions, and an open form allow the armchair to sit comfortably in both modern and more classic interiors.

In use, this model reveals its greatest strength. The high back provides stable support for the back, while the appropriately contoured seat and armrests allow for a natural, relaxed posture.

Illum Wikkelsø (1919–1999) was one of the representatives of post-war Danish modernism, trained as a cabinetmaker and designer. He worked with many manufacturers, including Eilersen, for whom some of his most refined models were created.
