Industrial swivel office chair manufactured by the Swedish firm Verkstads AB Lindqvist Motala in the 1960s. It is a simple Scandinavian design from the mid-20th century. The combination of metal, classic upholstery and wood in its natural finish creates a cohesive, workshop-inspired composition. Well-shaped wooden armrests soften the coolness of the metal elements and add a touch of warmth to the whole.
The seat and backrest form a compact, streamlined silhouette. They are upholstered in fabric in a timeless mélange shade of grey. Its colour complements the patina on the metal base perfectly. Verkstads AB Lindqvist based in the Swedish city of Motala was one of the iconic postwar manufacturers that had a major influence on Scandinavian office and industrial design. The company gained widespread recognition in the mid-20th century, specialising in the production of furniture and utilitarian goods that combined precision craftsmanship with modern engineering. Its designs, ranging from iconic metal stools and ladders to advanced ergonomic swivel chairs, became an integral part of modern postwar offices, workshops and architectural studios throughout Scandinavia.
The Lindqvist Motala brand became renowned for its uncompromising quality of workmanship, prioritising material durability and technical functionality, including smooth screw-based height-adjustment mechanisms. The manufacturer’s visual signature was its masterful balance between two aesthetics. On the one hand, it drew on raw, metal minimalism rooted in industrial design; on the other, it softened this with warm elements in fine wood—mainly teak or oak—and soft upholstery. This unique approach meant that furniture bearing the Motala company’s mark ceased to be regarded solely as workplace equipment and became classic examples of Mid-Century Modern style, sought after by collectors around the world.
