Oriental Zanjan Hamadan rug, Persia/Iran, 1960s

A hand-woven Zanjan oriental rug made in Iran in the 1960s. Traditionally flat-woven and dyed in shades of rustic red and ivory. A large geometric medallion extending from top to bottom adorns the centre.
Zanjan or Zanjan Hamadan rugs are a type of traditional Persian rug originating from the city of Zanjan, located in north-western Iran, near the Hamadan region. The city is an important stop on Iran’s Silk Road. It is also a centre for producing high-quality Persian rugs. All are entirely handmade by nomadic tribes. Zanjan rugs often feature geometric patterns, with motifs such as diamonds and polygons, as well as stylised floral motifs. Typical colours include reds, navy blues, blues and beiges. Strong, saturated colours are often used. These rugs are typically made from high-quality wool, with a cotton warp. The wool can be fairly thick, making the rug durable and long-lasting. The knot used in weaving these rugs is most often a symmetrical knot—the Turkish knot—which gives them strength. The Zanjan style is closely related to other rugs from the Hamadan region, but Zanjan rugs generally have a more refined and orderly appearance compared with the freer patterns of Hamadan. Zanjan Hamadan rugs are prized for their durability, handcraftsmanship and authenticity, carrying a piece of Persian tradition with them.
