Antique Baluch Persian Rug, Iran, c. 1910

This antique, hand-woven Baluch rug was made in the early 20th century. The rug features a traditional deep red colour with a geometric tribal pattern. It is hand-made and hand-dyed, giving it unique weaves and beautiful colouring, making it a work of art in its own right. Baluch rugs are woven across the wider region of Baluchistan, which includes Iran’s south-eastern province of Baluchistan, near the borders of Afghanistan and Pakistan. Baluch is a general term for a group of nomads comprising many tribes of different origins. The rug has a nomadic character and was originally intended for use in tribal tents, which were often moved from place to place. It has a decorative kilim at the shorter ends, designed to protect the rug from wear. The longer edges are finished with cords made from a blend of wool and goat or horse hair. The warp is made of wool.

The rug is of high quality. It is tightly woven, dense and fine (approximately 250,000 knots per square metre), fully reflecting the character of a genuine nomadic handcraft. These rugs are typically made in small sizes and feature vivid colours. They can be successfully layered with other rugs, following the recently popular carpet on the carpet trend. It has been preserved in its original condition and bears signs of wear and patina consistent with its age. It has undergone professional cleaning.
