Hamadan Oriental Rug, Persia / Iran, 1960s
Description
Hamadan Oriental rug, Persia / Iran, 1960s
Handwoven Hamadan Oriental rug made in Iran in the 1960s. Traditionally flat-woven and dyed in shades of raspberry pink and ivory. Hamadan rugs are traditionally handwoven rugs originating from the Hamadan region of western Iran. This region is one of the oldest carpet-weaving centres in the world and encompasses many villages and towns, each with its own unique patterns and styles. The various types of rugs made in Iran are most commonly named after the regions and towns where they are produced, such as Hamadan, Kerman and Shiraz, or after the nomadic tribes involved in their production. They most often feature central medallions, geometric motifs and floral patterns. These designs are usually symmetrical. Some elements are more abstract, while others are inspired by traditional Persian motifs. Typical colours used in Hamadan rugs include reds, navy blues, shades of blue, brown, beige and ivory. The colours are usually vivid and intense, achieved using natural plant- and mineral-based dyes. The rugs are handwoven from wool, often on a cotton warp, making them durable and resistant to wear. These rugs typically have a medium knot density, giving them a solid structure. The Persian asymmetrical knot is often used, allowing for greater precision and detail in the design. Hamadan rugs combine traditional craftsmanship with functionality, serving both as beautiful decorative elements and practical additions to an interior. They are testament to the rich history and culture of the region from which they originate. Hamadan rugs are popular both in local and international markets, valued for their durability, aesthetics and variety of patterns. The traditional art of Persian carpet weaving is part of Iran’s national cultural heritage. In 2010, the art of carpet weaving from Fars and Kashan was added to UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage. They are often chosen for both traditional and modern interiors.
The rug is in its original vintage condition. It shows signs of age-related wear, with minor losses to the fabric and fringe. Before shipping, the rug will undergo professional cleaning and will be ready for use.
The colours of products shown in photographs may differ slightly from the actual colours. This is due to individual monitor settings and the type of lighting—the photographs were taken in artificial light, which may affect the perception of the shades.
