Nomadic Qashqai runner, Persia/Iran, 1920s

Handwoven, elongated Qashqai nomadic runner made in Iran in the 1920s. Naturally dyed in shades of green and beige. The rug’s central feature is a five-part, symmetrical medallion. The rug displays geometric, floral motifs.

Often called a Qashqai runner, it is a type of rug woven by the nomadic Qashqai tribes living in southern Iran, especially around Shiraz. As with other Qashqai rugs, nomadic runners often feature geometric patterns such as diamonds, rectangles, hexagons, and nature-inspired motifs, e.g. stylised trees, flowers, and animal figures. Boteh motifs often also appear, i.e. a pattern resembling a drop or small pine tree. Due to their length, patterns on runners are generally arranged parallel to the longer edge. This may include repeating bands of patterns or a single, continuous motif running along the entire length of the rug. Qashqai rugs are characterised by vivid colours. These colours are traditionally obtained from natural dyes, giving them natural depth and durability. Like all Qashqai rugs, runners are handwoven, making each piece unique. The use of symmetrical knots, Persian knot or Senneh, guarantees precision in reproducing the patterns and high durability. High-quality wool is used. The wool used in Qashqai rugs is typically soft and dense, making the rug both durable and pleasant to the touch. Thanks to their durability, they are well suited to high-traffic areas. These rugs express the tradition and craftsmanship of the Qashqai tribes, reflecting their nomadic way of life, beliefs, history, tribal legends, and closeness to nature.
