Hamadan Kamseh Oriental Rug, Persia/Iran, 1960s
Description
Handwoven rug from the Hamadan Kamseh region of western Iran. Dating from the 1960s, it embodies everything that makes Persian weaving so compelling in a contemporary interior: a striking design, a deep, slightly muted palette, the irregularity of handcraft, and the noble patina of age. It is densely woven from locally sourced, pure wool pile.
The central area of the composition is filled with a brick-red and pink field, surrounded by an elaborate dark navy ornament. Its surface features small stylised flowers, botanical rosettes, medallions and geometric forms, scattered in a manner characteristic of traditional Persian weaving. The composition is not mechanically symmetrical. These subtle differences, shifts and spontaneity in the design are among the most fascinating aspects of its handmade construction. The rug is naturally dyed.
The whole is enclosed by a multi-layered border in shades of red, navy, ecru, brown and olive green. Its ornamentation features geometric meanders, stylised flowers, leaves and small motifs reminiscent of boteh. The strong navy blue draws the eye around the central field and gives the rug its distinctive graphic contrast.
The palette is now soft and nobly subdued: madder red, terracotta, powder pink, indigo, navy, cream, sandy beige, olive and warm brown. Years of use have subtly softened the pile, bringing out its natural tonal variations. Abrash is also visible — delicate transitions between shades of the same colour, resulting from changes in yarn batches and the dyeing process. In antique rugs, this is one of the features that gives them their individual character. This rug is a unique, handmade functional object whose aesthetic value also derives from the passage of time, the individuality of its construction and its visible history.
HISTORICAL NOTE
Hamadan is one of Iran’s most important historic centres of rug trading. The term Hamadan does not refer to one strictly defined workshop or pattern. It encompasses a broad area of western Iran where hundreds of village weaving centres operated for generations. The rugs were then brought to Hamadan, whose bazaar served as an important centre for purchasing and trade. This decentralised tradition is key to the aesthetic of Hamadan rugs. Instead of rigorously repeated workshop patterns, we encounter geometric compositions, bold borders, medallions, botanical motifs, boteh and variations on the herati pattern, interpreted by individual communities and weaving families. Contrasting combinations of red and navy are also characteristic.
Traditional rugs from this region were made by hand, often on vertical looms. One of the structural features of many Hamadan rugs is a single weft, which gives the reverse a distinctive rhythm and is associated with the region’s weaving technique.
The name Kamseh (Khamseh or Kamse) appears in classifications of rugs from the Hamadan region as the designation of one of the local weaving areas.
Before dispatch, the rug will be professionally cleaned and will be ready for use.
The rug is in its original vintage condition. It shows age-related signs of wear and minor areas of pile loss. The surface retains a distinct handwoven texture. On closer inspection, irregularities in the weave, slight variations in pile height and signs of many years of use are visible. The fringes and edges show natural signs of age, while areas of wear and loss typical of a vintage textile object can be seen in places. These should not be regarded as defects; they are part of its history and authenticity.
Colours shown in product photographs may differ slightly from the actual colours. This is due to individual monitor settings and the type of lighting—the photographs were taken in artificial light, which may affect the perception of the shades. We nevertheless make every effort to ensure that the photographs reflect the product’s actual appearance as faithfully as possible. The listing may include photographs of the item shown in an interior setting. These are for illustrative purposes only.
