Hand-woven Zanjan oriental rug made in Iran in the 1960s. Traditionally flat-woven and dyed in shades of rustic red, black and ivory. Zanjan or Zanjan Hamadan rugs are a type of traditional Persian rug originating from the city of Zanjan, located in northwestern Iran, near the Hamadan region. The city is an important stop on the Iranian Silk Road. It is also a centre for producing high-quality Persian rugs. They are all entirely handmade by nomadic tribes. Zanjan rugs often feature geometric patterns, with motifs such as diamonds and polygons, as well as stylised floral motifs. They often have a centrally positioned medallion extending from top to bottom. Typical colours include reds, navy, blues and beiges. Strong, saturated colours are often used. These rugs are usually made of high-quality wool with a cotton warp. The wool can be quite thick, making the rug durable and long-lasting. The knot used to weave these rugs is most commonly the symmetrical Turkish knot, which gives them strength. The Zanjan style is closely related to other rugs from the Hamadan region, but Zanjan rugs generally have a more refined and orderly appearance compared with the freer patterns of Hamadan. Zanjan Hamadan rugs are valued for their durability, handmade construction and authenticity, conveying a piece of Persian tradition.
