Description

Nomadic Tribal Shiraz Qashqai rug, Persia/Iran, 1940s
More than eight decades of history contained in a single, one-of-a-kind object.

A handwoven Tribal Shiraz Qashqai rug woven in southern Persia around the 1940s. This antique rug is an example of Persian tribal weaving, where utilitarian function meets an intuitive, almost painterly composition. Its pattern was not governed by mathematical perfection. On the contrary! Subtle differences in the design, proportions and rhythm of the ornaments bear witness to the work of the human hand and give it an authenticity that cannot be reproduced in contemporary production.

The dominant composition is formed by geometric medallions and fields filled with small floral motifs and abstract symbols. Deep navy blue interweaves with red, olive green, ochre and a natural ivory tone. The palette is refined, gently aged and full of tonal nuances. Over time, the colours have acquired a characteristic softness and depth.

Particular attention is drawn to the broad, multi-layered borders and rhythmic, geometricised ornaments. Their form reveals influences of Qashqai traditions and other weaving communities of southern Iran, whose wares reached the market for decades through Shiraz. This is a nomadic rug that can easily be rolled or folded and quickly transported.

This is a rug for interiors that do not need decoration, but do need a story. Its strong yet muted palette works beautifully with natural wood, stone, linen, leather and contemporary architectural forms. In a minimalist space, it becomes a central accent, while in a more eclectic interior it adds a layer of patina and visual depth.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

Shiraz, located in Fars Province in southern Iran, has been one of the region’s most important commercial centres for centuries. It was here that the wares of communities inhabiting the mountains and valleys of Fars came together, including those of the renowned Qashqai, Khamseh and Luri. As a result, the term Shiraz rug functioned for years as a broad name for rugs originating from this exceptionally rich weaving region. These rugs are made by nomadic tribes that migrate throughout the southern regions of Iran, particularly around the city of Shiraz.

In the tradition of the Qashqai and other tribal groups, a rug was more than a decoration. It was created from memory, without mechanically copying a design, and its ornaments formed part of a visual language passed down from generation to generation. Geometric forms, stylised plants, birds and symbolic signs created a personal record of the weaver’s world.

This is why the controlled imperfection of old rugs from Fars is so highly valued. Subtle shifts in the axes, slight variations in the ornaments and changes in colour intensity are not flaws, but traces of the human hand and the passage of time.

Qashqai Shiraz rugs are valued for their quality and durability. They are excellent examples of traditional Iranian craftsmanship, combining aesthetics, longevity and deep cultural symbolism. They are sought after worldwide by collectors and enthusiasts of Oriental rugs.

The rug is in original vintage condition. It has age-related signs of wear, minor losses to the weave and fringes.
