Thermal carafe, designed by Sigvard Bernadotte, Husqvarna Borstfabrik, Sweden, 1960s

Small thermal carafe designed by Sigvard Bernadotte for the Swedish manufacturer Husqvarna Borstfabrik in the 1960s. The carafe is made of orange-red plastic. The handle, lid and base are black. The opening is designed so that a coffee or tea filter can be placed directly on top.

Sigvard Oscar Fredrik, Prince Bernadotte, Count of Wisborg, was born on 7 June 1907 and until 1934 was known as Prince Sigvard of Sweden, Duke of Uppland, and was a member of the Swedish royal family. When he married a woman of unequal status, he lost his princely titles. He was also a successful industrial designer. He designed everything from luxury silverware for Georg Jensen to everyday plastic objects. Among his iconic designs were the Red Clara bottle opener, the EKA Swede 38 folding knife, the Margrethe bowl, the Bernadotte jug and the Facit Private typewriter.

Husqvarna Borstfabrik was popularly known as Borsten. Its range initially consisted only of brushes used in the foundry industry. The emerging plastics market prompted the company to expand its product range. Designers Acton Björn and Sigvard Bernadotte were invited to collaborate, designing new products, many of which became iconic, including the Table garden tableware range and the entire Signature series.

The carafe is in original vintage condition. It is fully functional and keeps beverages warm for many hours. It shows normal signs of use.
