Sigvard Bernadotte was born on 7 June 1907 in Stockholm, where he died on 4 February 2002. He studied political science and art history in Uppsala, and from 1930 trained at Konstfack in Stockholm. From the 1930s, he designed silver for the Danish workshop Georg Jensen – the Nasjonalmuseet collection in Oslo includes, among other works, his Modell 1010 from 1952, while Nationalmuseum in Stockholm holds bowls designed by him and made by Georg Jensen.
In 1950, together with Acton Bjørn, he founded Bernadotte & Bjørn in Copenhagen – the first Scandinavian industrial design firm. The office produced, among other things, the Margrethe melamine bowl (1950), manufactured by Rosti, and the Modernum kitchen set for Moderna Kök (1954–1955); Nasjonalmuseet also holds a design for SAS made by Norplast in 1969. In 1964, Bernadotte opened his own office, Bernadotte Design AB, in Stockholm.
The designer's work is held in the collections of Nationalmuseum in Stockholm and Nasjonalmuseet in Oslo, while the Margrethe bowl is also held by the Philadelphia Museum of Art. In 1952, he was awarded the Swedish Order of the Polar Star and the Danish Order of the Elephant, and in 1997 the Prince Eugen Medal.
