Isfahan Oriental Rug, Persia/Iran, 1940s
Description
Isfahan Oriental rug, Persia/Iran, 1940s
Handwoven Isfahan-style Persian rug, dated to the 1940s. A decorative, exceptionally dense floral composition, characteristic of Isfahan’s urban weaving tradition, is built around a central medallion and developed into a rhythmic, almost painterly botanical ornament.
This rug has a distinctly classical Persian character, yet its muted, sophisticated palette also allows it to sit comfortably in contemporary interiors. It is naturally dyed. Burgundy reds, deep navy, smoky blue, muted greens, powder pinks, ivory and muted yellows create a layered composition whose colours have acquired a natural, soft patina over time.
The most important element of the field is a large, elaborate medallion, from which the composition seems to spread in all directions. A dense network of winding stems, leaves, flowers and arabesque forms surrounds it. The ornament leaves almost no empty space. Motifs overlap, creating the effect of an ornamental “garden”. At the corners, extensive botanical sections visually connect the central composition with the border. The broad, dark border is filled with small, rhythmic floral and arabesque ornament, framed on both sides by several narrow decorative bands. The navy-and-burgundy ground strongly contrasts with the lighter interior of the rug and gives the whole piece a distinctive, architectural frame.
A close-up of the pile shows a very fine, regular weave pattern and a high level of detail. Individual flowers and leaves are small, but rendered in many shades, so the pattern does not appear flat. From a distance, the rug works as a harmonious colour composition, while up close it reveals a wealth of small forms and weaving craftsmanship.
This is a rug for an interior that needs no additional decoration. Its dense ornament and multicoloured palette work equally well with classic furnishings and more restrained, modernist surroundings. It also looks good paired with mid-century modern furniture, leather, dark wood and contemporary forms with simple construction. Its visual complexity means it can serve as a dominant object in the interior, rather than merely a backdrop for the furnishings.
Before shipping, the rug will be professionally cleaned and ready for use.
HISTORICAL NOTE
Isfahan occupies a special place in the history of Persian textile art. The city became one of the most important centres of rug production during the Safavid period, when Isfahan was the capital of Persia. In the 16th and 17th centuries, workshops associated with the royal court operated here, and rugs were among the most important forms of representative art of the period. The development of compositions with central medallions, arabesques, winding tendrils and flowers is strongly connected with the aesthetics of the Safavid Persian court. During the reign of Shah Abbas I, Isfahan also became an important centre of international trade. Persian rugs reached Europe and the Far East, while luxury textiles and rugs formed part of diplomatic exchange and exports. This flourishing influenced the European perception of the Persian rug as an object of luxury and art.
These rugs are considered among the most luxurious and artistically valuable Persian rugs, and are often collected as works of art. Isfahan rugs are frequently regarded as a symbol of Persian excellence in the art of rug weaving and are sought after worldwide by collectors and enthusiasts of luxury interiors.
The rug is in original vintage condition. Its state of preservation is consistent with the age of the object. Signs of use, natural unevenness of the surface, areas of wear, and the characteristic wear to the fringes and edges found on older rugs are visible. This is not an object with the appearance of a new rug; its present-day character stems precisely from the authentic, several-decades-long history of the material.
The colours of products shown in photographs may differ slightly from the actual colours. This is due to individual monitor settings and the type of lighting—the photographs were taken in artificial light, which may affect the perception of the shades. We nevertheless make every effort to ensure that the photographs reflect the actual appearance of the product as faithfully as possible. Photographs of the item in an interior may also appear in the listing. They are for reference only.
