Afshar Oriental Rug, Persia/Iran, 1950s

Handwoven Afshar oriental rug made in southeastern Iran, in the town of Kerman, in the 1950s. Dyed in shades of deep red, burgundy, beige and blue. Afshar rugs are a type of traditional Persian rug woven by the Afshar tribe, which historically inhabited southeastern Iran, particularly the Kerman region. These rugs are valued for their unique patterns, expressive colours and high quality of handcraftsmanship. They often feature geometric designs, including motifs such as diamonds, hexagons and other regular shapes. Plant and tree motifs are also frequently found. Many Afshar rugs have a central medallion or a repeated symmetrical pattern that is more austere and geometric than those found in rugs from cities such as Isfahan or Kashan. The patterns often reference tribal life, everyday objects and nature. A popular design features a large central element with one or more geometric medallions, which some believe symbolises stretched hide. The colours are saturated and luminous. Deep shades of indigo, carnelian, saffron and ochre predominate. They are achieved using natural dyes, giving Afshar rugs depth and richness of colour. They are typically made from high-quality, hand-spun wool. The warp may be made of wool or cotton. The use of wool gives the rugs softness and durability, making them highly hard-wearing. The knot used in Afshar rugs is a symmetrical knot, which adds strength and makes the rugs denser and more durable. Knot density is generally lower than in city rugs such as those from Isfahan, giving them a more rustic character. Owing to the Afshar people’s nomadic way of life, these rugs often reflect a raw aesthetic associated with tribal traditions, giving them an authentic, ethnic character.
