Description

Senneh Oriental rug, Persia / Iran, 1960s

Handwoven Senneh Oriental rug made in Iran in the 1960s. Traditionally flat-woven and dyed in shades of rustic red, purple and ivory. Senneh rugs (also spelled Senna or Senneh) are a type of Persian rug originating from the city of Sanandaj, formerly known as Senneh, in western Iran’s Kurdistan Province. These rugs are known for their high-quality craftsmanship and precise weaving, which sets them apart from other Persian rugs. They often feature complex geometric designs, such as diamond patterns, boteh shapes (also known as paisley patterns), and medallion motifs. These designs are typically intricate and precisely woven. Typical of Senneh rugs are muted colours, including shades of red, blue, brown, beige and cream. They are achieved using natural dyes, giving the rugs their distinctive appearance. Senneh rugs are distinguished by a weaving technique known as the Senneh knot, or asymmetrical knot. This technique allows for a finer and more detailed pattern than other techniques. High-quality wool, sometimes blended with silk, is used to make Senneh rugs, giving them softness and a delicate sheen. They are usually densely woven, which contributes to their durability and the precision of their patterns. Senneh rugs are valued for both their aesthetic appeal and durability, making them a popular choice among enthusiasts of traditional Persian rugs.

The rug is in its original vintage condition. It has signs of age-related wear, minor losses in the fabric and fringe. Before dispatch, the rug will be professionally cleaned and ready for use.

The colours of products shown in photographs may differ slightly from the actual colours.
