Long Oriental Hamadan Rug, IKEA, Persia/Iran, 1960s

This handwoven, long Hamadan oriental runner was made in Iran in the 1960s for IKEA. Traditionally flat-woven and dyed in shades of rustic red and indigo blue. The rug was woven in the vicinity of Hamadan in north-western Persia. These rugs are tightly knotted from lustrous wool and are of high quality. The colours are most commonly red and blue, with patterns incorporating nomadic elements and geometric motifs. Medallion motifs also occur. Handwoven rugs are made using techniques that give individual sections structural integrity. They consist of hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of threads knotted onto a cotton or wool rug foundation. Handwoven rugs are created by repeatedly passing the warp through the rug’s weft. These techniques ensure that every part of the rug is an integral part of its structure and is less prone to coming apart. Different types of rugs made in Iran are usually named after the regions and towns where they are produced, such as Hamadan, Kerman or Shiraz, or after the nomadic tribes involved in their production. The traditional art of Persian rug weaving is part of Iran’s national cultural heritage. In 2010, the traditional skills of carpet weaving in Fars and Kashan were inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
