Handwoven Bokhara oriental rug made in Pakistan in the 1960s. Traditionally woven in a flat weave and dyed in shades of red, blue and ivory.

Bokhara rugs are a traditional type of rug with a distinctive pattern and provenance, originating in areas of present-day Turkmenistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan. The patterns on these rugs are inspired by the textiles of Turkmen tribes, particularly the Tekke tribe. Bokhara rugs feature a highly distinctive pattern, typically consisting of repeating geometric motifs, most often oval or diamond-shaped Gul forms. The pattern is arranged in rows and columns, often surrounded by borders made up of smaller geometric designs. Traditional Bokhara rugs feature warm, deep colours such as red, burgundy, dark blue, beige and various shades of brown. These colours are achieved using natural dyes. They are usually made from wool, sometimes with the addition of silk, which gives them softness and a subtle sheen. These rugs are handwoven with great precision and attention to detail, making them highly valued for their quality and durability. Bokhara rugs are prized worldwide for their elegant appearance and durability, while also representing a beautiful example of traditional craftsmanship.
