Antique Shiraz Rug, Iran, c. 1890

This antique, handwoven Shiraz rug was made around 1890 in Persia (present-day Iran). The city of Shiraz is located in Fars Province in southern Iran, where visitors can see, among other attractions, famous gardens and the ancient city of Persepolis. The area surrounding the city is inhabited by nomads—the Qashqai—who trade their rugs at a vast bazaar with an unforgettable atmosphere. Our rug features traditional colours in shades of brown and navy blue, along with geometric, tribal patterns. Through the natural dyeing of the wool, handweaving and numerous variations in the pigments, the rug is unique, with a beautiful colour palette that makes it a work of art in its own right. The pattern is typically nomadic, featuring simple geometric shapes and a noticeable central area. Shiraz rugs have a nomadic character and were originally intended for use in tribal tents, which were often moved from place to place. The shorter ends feature a kilim, whose purpose is to protect the rug from wear. The longer ends are finished with cords. Both the warp and weft are made from natural wool.

The quality of the rug’s workmanship is high. As befits a true Shiraz rug, it is relatively loose and thin, fully conveying the character of an authentic nomadic handicraft. These rugs are typically made in small sizes and feature vivid colours. They can be successfully paired with other rugs in line with the recently popular carpet on the carpet trend. The rug remains in its original condition, with signs of wear, abrasion and patina. It has undergone professional cleaning.
