A hand-woven Mir–Saruk oriental rug made in Iran in the 1960s. Mir–Saruk is a term used to describe a type of rug pattern that combines two distinct traditional styles: the Mir pattern and the Saruk or Sarough pattern. Mir is a pattern originating from the Serabend region of Iran, also known as Boteh, a motif resembling a drop or a small pine tree, sometimes considered a prototype of the paisley pattern. The Mir pattern is characterised by small, repeating motifs, often arranged in rows to create a dense and symmetrical composition. The rug’s background is often red, blue, or brown, while the main motif is rendered in contrasting colours. Saruk is a rug style originating from the Arak region of Iran, known for its high-quality wool, durability, and richness of pattern. Saruk rugs are characterised by a central medallion, floral motifs, and elegant, curving lines. Saruk colour palettes are usually rich, dominated by shades of red, pink, blue, and beige. A rug described as Mir–Saruk combines these two styles. It therefore brings together the delicacy and harmony of the Mir pattern with the refinement and richness of the Saruk pattern, creating an elegant and unique piece valued both for its aesthetics and its quality of workmanship.

The rug is in original vintage condition. It has minor signs of wear associated with age. Before shipment, the rug will undergo professional cleaning and will be ready for use.

The rug features the abrash. This is a phenomenon found in traditional, hand-woven rugs, characterised by subtle variations in shades of the same colour within a single textile. It is most commonly seen in Persian, Turkish, Caucasian, and other rugs made by hand from natural materials such as wool or silk. Colour variations may result from the use of natural dyes, which do not always produce a uniform effect, particularly when the wool was dyed in different batches or at different times. As wool ages, it may change colour to varying degrees, which also contributes to the abrash effect. Although this effect might be perceived as an imperfection, it is often valued by collectors and enthusiasts of traditional rugs, as it adds unique character, attests to the authenticity of the handcraftsmanship, and enhances the rug’s value.
