This antique, handwoven Shiraz carpet was made around 1850 in Persia (present-day Iran). The city of Shiraz is located in Fars Province in southern Iran, known for its famous gardens and the ancient city of Persepolis. The area surrounding the city is inhabited by nomads—the Qashqai—who trade their carpets in a vast bazaar with an unforgettable atmosphere. Our carpet features traditional colours in shades of brown and navy blue, along with geometric, tribal patterns. Natural wool dyes, hand weaving and numerous variations in pigment make this carpet unique, giving it a beautiful colour palette and making it a work of art in its own right. The pattern is distinctly nomadic, featuring simple geometric motifs and a clearly defined central field. Shiraz carpets have a nomadic character and were originally intended for use in tribal tents, which were often moved from place to place. A kilim band runs along the shorter ends, protecting the carpet from wear. The longer ends are finished with cords. Both the warp and weft are made from natural wool.
