Pair of Leather Swivel Armchairs, Designed by C. Straub, Germany, 1950s

A pair of swivel armchairs designed by Carl Straub and produced in the 1950s. The frames are made of wood and fully upholstered in genuine leather with a pronounced patina. The armchairs feature a distinctive profile in which the line connecting the seat to the backrest is visibly bent, while the two planes are joined by an angular rim. The armrests, also circular in form, are likewise made of wood and upholstered in leather. The swivel bases are made of anodised aluminium, and the cushions retain their original filling.

Carl Straub, often known as C. Straub, was an architect, designer and manufacturer. His work dates primarily from the 1950s and 1960s. In the world of mid-century design, he is considered one of the more interesting representatives of post-war modernism in Germany. Straub not only conceived furniture, but also ran his own furniture manufactory in Germany. This means that his pieces are technically coherent, while the quality of the leathers used and the precision of the aluminium castings were under his direct control.

The armchairs have been preserved in their original condition. They bear numerous signs of age, including wear, scratches, scuffs, colour changes and traces of repair. The leather has a natural, original patina. We believe, however, that this complements the style of the armchairs and their industrial character perfectly. These are among the few pieces of furniture that will suit the atmosphere of both a penthouse and a warehouse, combining a modernist form with an industrial character. The seat height is 41 cm.
