A set of five collectible metal Åland chairs designed by Danish designer Niels Gammelgaard for Swedish company IKEA in the 1980s. Visually light yet structurally solid, they are made entirely of black powder-coated metal. They feature characteristic contoured seats and backrests made of perforated mesh metal sheet, giving them an industrial, raw character while ensuring breathability and comfort. The simple, restrained frame, made of gently curved steel, highlights the functionality of the furniture while also revealing the designer’s sophisticated approach to form. These chairs embody the essence of 1980s design—raw, yet not lacking in style. Their minimalist form, comfortable contoured seats and visual lightness make them ideal for loft, modern and post-industrial interiors, as well as more restrained Japandi or Scandinavian settings. They work equally well around a dining table, in an office space or as an accent in a gallery or studio.

Niels Gammelgaard is a Danish industrial designer who has been associated with IKEA since the 1970s. Trained as an architect, he is known for his minimalist approach to form and his fondness for functional metal structures. He co-created many iconic IKEA furniture designs, including Moment and Järpen, as well as the now-rare Åland chairs.

IKEA is an international conglomerate of Swedish origin that designs and sells ready-to-assemble furniture, kitchen appliances and home accessories. Founded in Sweden in 1943 by 17-year-old Ingvar Kamprad, IKEA has been the world’s largest furniture retailer since 2008. The company is known for modernist designs across a range of products and furniture, while its interior design projects are often associated with ecological simplicity.

The chairs have been preserved in their original vintage condition. They show minor age-related signs, scuffs, scratches and natural patina. The seat is 44 cm high. The chair measures 8 cm in depth when folded.
