Arne Norell was self-taught – a cabinetmaker, upholsterer and furniture designer. In 1958 he moved to Frinnaryd near Aneby in Småland and founded Möbel AB Arne Norell there with his wife Britta. The company, later operating as Norell Möbel AB, was run by the designer’s daughter, Marie Norell Möller.
Norell’s best-known designs include the Sirocco safari armchair (1964), the Ari lounge armchair (1966) with a chromed steel frame and leather straps, and Ariet armchairs (1968). For the Ari armchair, Norell received the British furniture industry’s “Showpiece” award in 1973, posthumously.
Norell’s work is held in the collections of Nationalmuseum in Stockholm and Möbeldesignmuseum. He died in 1971.
