Description

An icon of Scandinavian design by Arne Norell. The Cromwell model, designed in 1961, is an example of timeless modernism, where simplicity of form meets exceptional comfort. The sofa has remained one of the most recognisable designs in Swedish design for decades.

This example is distinguished by natural leather with a beautiful, authentic patina that highlights its history and unique character. The leather is in earthy shades of brown. Loose seat and back cushions provide a high level of comfort, while subtly angled armrests and sturdy wooden legs lend lightness to the form. This design works equally well in minimalist and classic interiors. Cromwell is the essence of Arne Norell’s philosophy: creating durable, functional and exceptionally comfortable furniture made from the highest-quality natural materials. The characteristic combination of solid wood and fine leather means that the sofa gains even greater aesthetic value over the years.

The Cromwell sofa embodies the aesthetic of Scandinavian design and modernist expression refined through decades of tradition.

Arne Norell lived from 1917 to 1971. He was an icon of Swedish design and a pioneer of post-war Scandinavian modernism. In 1958, he founded the Möbel AB Arne Norell workshop, where he created upholstered furniture renowned for its timeless comfort and unique construction. His style was distinguished by the rejection of glue and screws in favour of innovative methods of joining raw wood, metal and thick natural leather using straps and buckles. Inspired by Danish minimalism, he designed the iconic Sirocco safari-style armchair and the steel-and-leather Ari, which earned him the posthumous title of Furniture Masterpiece of the Year. Today, his original designs are still handmade in Sweden and are among the most sought-after pieces on the vintage furniture market.

The seat height is 40 cm.

The sofa is in original vintage condition. It shows signs of age and has developed a natural patina. The leather has scuffs, scratches, pigment changes, repairs and signs of wear.
