Description

Modernist Tellus sofa, designed by F. Jansson for SM Wincrantz, Sweden, 1950s

Stylish two-seater Tellus sofa designed by Folke Jansson and produced for SM Wincrantz Möbelindustri AB Skövde in 1955. The sofa features beech legs with original brass details. It has been upholstered in fabric in shades of grey and white. Thanks to its angular legs and expressive shapes, the sofa has a modernist design.

Folke Jansson (1920–2017) was a Swedish designer, sculptor, and ceramicist who left a lasting mark on the history of global design as an uncompromising innovator of the Mid-Century Modern movement. In the 1950s, Swedish design was dominated by austere, geometric functionalism, which Jansson considered too monotonous and angular. Drawing on his training as a sculptor, he decided to challenge prevailing trends and introduced organic, fluid forms inspired by nature and abstract art into furniture design. His overarching artistic idea was to design objects using a single, uninterrupted line in which the seat, backrest, and armrests merged into a coherent whole.

This vision is perfectly reflected in his undisputed masterpiece, the Arabesk armchair, designed in 1955 and produced by S.M. Wincrantz. This sculptural piece of furniture shocked contemporary critics with its bold, asymmetrical silhouette and proved that avant-garde form could go hand in hand with ergonomics and comfort. Although Jansson created only a few iconic collections, including the Tellus and Orion series, his work achieved cult status. Today, the Arabesk armchair represents Swedish design in the permanent collection of the prestigious Vitra Design Museum, while Folke Jansson himself remains a symbol of the courage that transformed functional craft into pure art.

The piece was partially restored but was subsequently used as a showroom display. The rear legs do not have spherical feet. The sofa has minor soiling on the seat. Its overall visual condition is very good. The seat height is 40 cm. The manufacturer’s mark is located on the lower rail.
