Three-seater brown sofa, designed by Folke Ohlsson, Fritz Hansen, Denmark, 1960s
Description
An icon of Scandinavian modernism. Three-seater sofa, model 0765, designed by Folke Ohlsson – one of the most important representatives of 20th-century Swedish design, who became renowned as a master of harmoniously combining elegance with functionality, and whose designs became synonymous with timeless style Scandinavian Modern. The sofa was designed for the Danish manufacturer Fritz Hansen in the 1960s, while Model 0765 was produced in the 1950s. It perfectly captures the spirit of the era – simplicity of form, balanced proportions and attention to detail make this sofa not only a comfortable piece of furniture but also a collector’s item. The characteristic, slightly tapered solid-wood legs and subtly reclined, high backrest emphasise the lightness of the construction while providing stability and comfort. The armrests are slightly rounded. It is upholstered in the original brown fabric. Soft, well-contoured back and seat cushions ensure comfort. This timeless piece is characterised by harmonious lines, a subtle form and the refined simplicity characteristic of the Mid-Century Modern style. Sofa 0765 is the essence of Scandinavian modernism – an aesthetic based on minimalism, natural materials and functionality. This Ohlsson design gained international recognition and became one of the symbols of the golden age of Swedish furniture design.
This example is an excellent proposition for those looking for unique furniture with a history, in original condition. Folke Ohlsson’s sofa will work equally well in classic vintage arrangements and contemporary interiors, bringing a refined Scandinavian design accent to either setting. It is not only a comfortable and elegant piece of furniture – it is also an investment in a timeless design icon whose value increases over the years.
Folke Ohlsson was born and raised in Sweden. In 1953, he moved to the United States and established Dux Incorporated, which achieved international success. Ohlsson’s armchair and sofa designs are valued for their graceful combination of traditional details and modernist simplicity. As a result, his work earned considerable recognition and numerous awards, including one for the best design at the Triennale exhibition in Milan in 1964, as well as the distinction of the Royal Order of the Vasa in Sweden, awarded by King Gustaf VI Adolf.
Fritz Hansen, also known as Republic of Fritz Hansen, is a Danish furniture design company whose history began in 1872 in Nakskov. From the outset, Fritz Hansen and his son Christian emphasised the high quality of the furniture they produced, a characteristic that remains central to the company to this day. The long list of commissions during the company’s first fifty years is testament to this. At the beginning of the 20th century, Christian Hansen began experimenting with steam-bending beechwood, and in 1915 he created the first laminated chairs, which became the company’s speciality. The 1950s at the company were dominated by Arne Jacobsen. He began collaborating with the company as early as 1934, but the breakthrough came when he created the laminated Ant chair in 1952. His subsequent designs – Series 7 (1955), Swan (1958) and Egg (1958), designed for the Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, became milestones in the history of Fritz Hansen and are still produced today.
The seat is 41 cm high.
The sofa has been preserved in its original vintage condition. It has minor signs of use. Slight discolouration of the fabric.
